We all love our dishwashers. They save time and energy. Plus, they make cleaning up after dinner a breeze! I’m sure you’ll agree that we appreciate these appliances even more when they break and we have to go without them for a while. Does your dishwasher need a little TLC? Here are three common problems with these appliances and how to repair them. We hope it saves you a little time, money, and frustration.
Dishwasher Isn’t Cleaning Properly
You open your dishwasher to put your clean dishes away only to discover that they’re still dirty. As a result, you spend a ton of time handwashing them before you can put them in your cabinets. What could be causing this issue?
The most common culprit is a dirty filter. Most modern models have a filter just below the bottom rack that you can easily remove without tools. Pull this out and clean up the debris before reinstalling it. Another cause could be that you’re low on rinse aid. To check your rinse aid levels, lay the door down flat. If the liquid is sitting below the minimum line, it’s time to refill it. The third possible cause is improper loading. A lade or pot handle might be set up in such a way that it’s restricting the motion of the washer arms. How do you fix it? After loading your machine, try gently spinning the washer arm(s). Readjust the contents until it spins smoothly.
Water Isn’t Getting Hot Enough
Hot water is needed to activate the detergent and clean thoroughly. If the incoming water isn’t hot enough, you’ll find that your machine is leaving a detergent residue on the surface of your dishes (most apparently on your glasses). So what can you do?
Thankfully, there’s a simple solution. Just turn on the hot water at your kitchen faucet and briefly run it until it’s hot. Do this right before you start a load. This will ensure that the incoming water is hot enough to dissolve the detergent and make your dishes squeaky clean.
Not Using the Right Amount or Type of Detergent
Using more detergent results in cleaner dishes, right? Not necessarily. Using too much detergent can actually cause a buildup of detergent residue on your dishes. And using regular dish soap can cause the appliance to overflow and impede its performance. Our suggestion? Only use automatic dishwashing detergent in your machine and never go over the suggested amounts.
